Greg (Greg) O. Michalenko
|
Greg grew up in Saskatchewan and stayed there to do his doctorate in biology. He combined his interests in politics and the natural sciences to found the Resources Study Group at the University of Saskatchewan, to investigate the social and environmental effects of new pulp mills in the province. Before coming to Waterloo he went to the University of Zurich in Switzerland where he spent four years studying the chemistry and architecture of mushroom cell walls.
Greg has worked with The Nishnawbe Aski Nation which represents natives n northwestern Ontario, on development problems in northern Ontario. He has also worked for a small remote Indian community on a "harvest study" which will quantify and evaluate all products, such as fish, furs, big and small game, waterfowl and wood, that are taken from the land. His other research interests are in aboriginal environmental issues, environmental assessment and applied ecology.
Greg has retired from ERS after many years as a respected Professor and Undergraduate Officer. He continues to counsel students on their senior honours projects and still offers an environmental monitoring field course in August.
Greg enjoys bicycling, picking mushrooms, foreign languages, cooking, and some modest gardening.
