New name emphasizes environmental success
Clean water, sustainable energy, and climate change are crucial issues facing Canada and countries around the world. To better reflect its strong record of research and teaching in these areas of environmental management, the Department of Geography became the Department of Geography and Environmental Management in 2008.
Background
- Major international environmental management projects in Bali, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) indicate the high-impact work by faculty and students in this theme area.
- Environmental management is the most common research area chosen by graduate students. Many PhD graduates are recruited for research and teaching positions in Canada and internationally.
- The department’s research and academic programs are hands-on and solutions-oriented. Adding “environmental management” to the name highlights the valuable, practical nature of the department’s activities.
- Dozens of undergraduate students have worked with professors on projects relating to energy conservation and renewable energy, water, and climate change.
- Graduates have excelled in government, the private sector, and non-profit (NGO) agencies.
